2010-04-30 13:07:04 (6721 views) First 100% successful waterproofing test.
Test subject: empty DL2000 receiver enclosure, with NEW impossibly tight grommets by Mr Tang, new softer main cables, and the vibrating motor sticking out with its own cable.
Test 1: very high pressure jets of water from all directions, for 2 minutes
Test 2: submerged in a foot of water, cables pulled to the sides
Results: absolutely no water entered the device. Motor still functional.
This was a short but intense test. The main issue at this point is that it's very difficult to insert the cables through the grommets. We need to change cable again, fortunately we've got a "cable lady" by now and she's already on the job trying to find something with the right properties.
With incorporation under way and waterproofing 100% solved things will now move quite fast. Next week we visit Mr Tang's factory for a last check on manufacturability of the vibrating motor overmold, and to try to make it a bit more rugged so the motor's thin flex pcb doesn't snap if you bend the cable near the juncture.
At the same time we will proceed with one final spray painted plastic prototype of receiver + remote with the new minor modifications (more space for the battery connector, motor grommet hole moved a bit farther away from the rubber attachment boss, remote lightpipe). A last try before we commit to the plastic mold!
Next week we will also try to visit the PCB assembly house and shoot some video. We need to meet them to sort out some logistics, tax and component importation issues, aside from verifying their quality is acceptable.
