Clue 4 hint 5

2011-10-04 18:50:25 (6646 views)

As CB351 points out,

The earliest known letter notation in the Western musical tradition appears in the textbook on music De institutione musica by the 6th-century philosopher Boethius.

The letter names are sometimes called the "Boethian notation" after Boethius, a Roman writer and statesman who lived in the 5th century. He was in the service of Emperor Theodoric, was accused of treason and executed in the year 524 A.D. He was the first to document the use of letters as names for notes.

The day clue 3 came out I tried writing down all the letters of the notes and even tried the letters H onwards for the upper octave. It got me nowhere. I tried all three instruments.

I'm not sure if we should use the first 15 letter scale(cant find it online) or the more common first 7 repeating letters as the key. I dont have enough musical skill to properly decode the sheet music so I shall wait for someone to crack this.

This morning I woke up with a new guess about the mystery device. I think it might be an input device of some kind. In the original blog post announcing the mystery, DLHQ indicated it was "orthogonal" in its functions to the DL2000. The DL2000 is essentially an output device: it takes an electronic radio signal and transduces it into something you can sense.

So perhaps the mystery device is the opposite - it provides a way for the user to send input back into the the DL system. Having some kind of custom input device for the DL system would enable users to close the feedback loop that was setup with the DL2000. This makes particular sense considering the multiple-choice based "training" materials and courses DLHQ have been working on (http://www.dreamloverlabs.com/dl2000-courses.php).

So now I'm thinking the mystery device is essentially a keyboard for answering multiple-choice questions with an electronically-controlled locking mechanism for the users hands (the gears) to make answering mandatory. Perhaps it can be bolted to a surface to keep the user immobilized. Either way, it would make participating in a selected DL education course mandatory. And since one of the hints suggested it could be used "off-line" as well, perhaps it has a small screen on which it can display downloaded courses when it is used away from a computer.

And if the "student" also is locked into a DL2000, then the course testing system, based on the mystery device, would be an order of magnitude more effective, since it could go beyond just enforcing participating in the course and actually punish and reward individual answers.

I think the latest batch of clues about musical notation are hinting at the A, B, C, D etc used in multiple choice tests.

This makes me rethink one of my earlier guesses that this new device could be something used in conjunction with tongue exercises/training. My boyfriend writes out letters with his tongue. Sometimes the alphabet, sometimes my name, sometimes we have a little spelling bee.

I can just envision some device where the user works gears up and down, left and right with his tongue to form letters. As he gets more and more proficient, more and more resistance could be added. The device plays a note and the user writes out the corresponding letter with his tongue. His wife/girlfriend/owner can eventually decide which letters she likes best.

The feedback from this device back to the computer wouldn't need to be any more elaborate than a mouse or a joystick.

It's something that could be used independently of a DL2K or in conjunction with it.

Tongue improvement is already something Dream Lover Labs has already addressed at http://www.dreamloverlabs.com/tonguelengthening.php so it's likely something already on their radar.

If this isn't it, hopefully, this will plant the seeds for their third product to introduce into the market (hint hint).

OK, been lurking for a while, but this puzzle intrigues me (as all puzzles do) and I have to take a shot at this.

I think Area 51 and Cheyenne Mountain are meant to be examples of "isolated military fortifications."

I think the clues that lead to Pavia have two purposes.

First, the Roman Empire had one of these "isolated military fortifications' near Pavia. The Latin word for such a site is Castrum.

Second, I think it was supposed to lead to the Ciel d'Oro (Golden Sky), which could be an oblique reference to the euphemistic "golden showers".

All this leads me to conjecture that the device is a remotely controlled, mechanical device designed to prevent ejaculation (figurative castration) and, possibly, urination.

What would be really intriguing is if the promised USB interface was meant to be on smartphone, like the iphone mentioned in the latest posting. If so, I hope there is also going to be an Android version.

The discussion about Boethian notation has got me thinking again. I've done some searching, and I am unable to find a translation to convert modern musical notes into Boethian notation. However, lets assume for a moment that A is A, and B is B for the first octave.

Looking at the music in the first bar, we notice that the primary chord is a C chord. Notes are C E G. There is a passing note in the base part, which is an A. Put this together, and rearrange the order, and we get CAGE.

Thats the good news. Now for the bad news. I was hoping to find the word COCK or DICK in there as well, to hint that there would be a USB controlled chastity device that has been previously suggested. Alas, without the proper mapping from Boethian notation to modern notation, I am just guessing.

Right now, my brain is tired, and I've had enough googling on Boethian notation. I'm sure the DL team can help motivate us... How about a prize for the person who cracks the code to win one of the new items?
