Clue 4 hint 4

2011-10-03 17:11:43 (6807 views)

Thanks to McSlavey for leading us to the resting place of Severinus Boëthius (ca. 480–524 or 525 AD). Boëthius was a philosopher of the early 6th century. He was born in Rome to an ancient and important family which included emperors Petronius Maximus and Olybrius and many consuls.

Here, we find a copy of his "De institutione musica", the first book to ever describe a unique and very familiar notation.

The image of Boethius's notation is available in higher-resolution here: http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/__data/assets/image/0018/42912/05_colleges_corr.JPG.

I believe this page from Boethius's book is a representation of harmonics that can be played on a monochord, which is a one-stringed instrument that can be used to investigate harmonics (apparently it may also have had a second tuning string as well).

I haven't been able to find any texts referring to this particular page of Boethius's notation, so I can only speculate that it is related to the monochord instrument. The earlier clue of the gear assemblies is consistent with a device that could vary the tension of a string of some kind, so perhaps the mystery DL device is some kind of monochord-based training tool?

Music notation systems have used letters of the alphabet for centuries. The 6th century philosopher Boethius is known to have used the first fifteen letters of the alphabet to signify the notes of the two-octave range that was in use at the time. Though it is not known whether this was his devising or common usage at the time, this is nonetheless called Boethian notation.

also The MIDI system for electronic musical instruments and computers uses a straight count starting with note 0 for C-1 at 8.1758 Hz up to note 127 for G9 at 12,544 Hz

maybe clue #4 is a cypher of some sort.

Now that the new iPhone is being announced, it's a good time for Dream LoverLabs to announce as well, wouldn't you say?

My guess is it's a remote controlled or computer controlled whipping machine using a monochord (one string) single tail.....tell us already!
